garage tunes

for years my garage has been lacking serious music.. ive allways had tunes but not really quality music. just the usual variety of boom boxes. last year i was able to arranged free shipping on 4 210 cabs. i put a pair upstairs and the other two were left just sitting in the garage. finally after much scurvying of parts, i had the components to get these babies rockin'. i had a pair of 515e's, that i had tried in a few boxes, including my 828's, the bass response was overwhelming with these drivers, literally driving me of the couch. i ended up putting them in some 816v cabs and they settled right down..very nice. then i had the chance to get another pair and i figured they would all work well in the 210's.the second pair showed up destroyed by ups, but the seller agreed to have bill recone them for just an additional 50 bucks, at this point i was only into them for 350.00 total, i think thats a pretty good deal. ive allways liked the horn loaded speakers, their ability to generate energy is outstanding. all the other speaker systems ive ever owned just didnt get loud enough, and with these 210's, the sound is very little diminished through walls even. the garage has an r-16 door in it and the sound is very nearly as loud outside, as inside.
so..making room for 210's in an allready overcrowded garage? alot of work, had to move everything! but now theyre done and it sounds amazing. i'm using an altec 704 reciever, that while pulls signals in very good, starts to distort after about level 5 on the dial. 809-8a crossovers, 16 ohm drivers for the horns, with new phrams from bill..heres the linksthe final setup

ill get some pics of the reciever up soon, try to do a spl test and guess the watts of this old reciever. but im here to tell ya...210's are the way to go, if you have the room. if you dont..make the room. its been really nice having them in the garage, as i can stand 40 ft away from them and get a better idea of the image projection these babies have. they will of course need bracing..and a set of covers to keep the dust off them

Ever consider an electronic x-over and bi-amping them ?

I had the same setup, but w/ dual 288c's and four 210 cabinets w/ eight 515b's. Initially I had four 1005b horns, then went to 1505b horns, then MR94b Mantarays, and now JBL 2360's w/ 2446j
drivers. Found that some CD's and concert DVD's sound better w/ different x-over frequencies. Sometimes I run the 210's all the way up to 800 or 1000Hz, and other times down as low as 2 or 3 hundred. Most often it's near 500 - maybe even a little lower than that. Having the ability to change and adjust that...... along with the time delay feature on my Rane AC 23......really helps. Used to have the original N500c x-overs, but got rid of them years ago.

It's pretty loud eh? .........

What do you think of the idea of laying down some really nice veneer on the flared parts of the horn - including the sides ? 'Been toying around with that idea for years. Not anywhere on the outside of the box, just inside the horn. This might give you some ideas. Look at the photo that says "CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW":

If you look closely, the mid-bass cabinets in that system have a curve or flare that's very similiar to an Altec 210.
